Dr. Cathrine Hoyo, is a cancer epidemiologist. She holds a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Master’s degree in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of California at Berkeley. Her main research focus is on understanding the underlying factors that may explain differences in the occurrence of cancers of the esophagus and prostate between individuals of African descent and others. Because obesity is such a complex trait, she focuses on the underlying genetic and epigenetics of growth-related genes, and how these interact with environmental exposures to influence the risk of subsequent adenocarcinomas. She is also collecting data from mothers and infants in the perinatal period, to better understand the fetal basis of adult complex diseases such as cancer.
