Duke Midwifery Service

In 2003, the Duke Midwives established the CenteringPregnancy program at the Durham County Health Department. CenteringPregnancy is a national program for group prenatal care that emphasizes self-assessment, education, and social support, while providing continuity of care to a cohort of 8-12 women with similar due dates. Since 2003, the program at DCHD has grown significantly, offering one new group every month and recently receiving site approval by the Centering Heathcare Institute.

In addition to increased satisfaction, research has shown that women in CenteringPregnancy have 1/3 lower relative risk of having a preterm infant than women in traditional care.

For more information about the CenteringPregnancy program at DCHD, contact Kim Dau at kim.dau@duke.edu.
