The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Duke University has a long history of commitment to excellence in graduate and undergraduate medical education. The program has a nationally and internationally recognized faculty who are dedicated to training future leaders of our specialty. The program’s missions are to provide outstanding clinical education and training in women’s health specialties and subspecialties, provide mentorship and a foundation for basic and clinical research and to assist the trainees in the development of teaching skills at the undergraduate and graduate medical education levels.
 
Post graduate Medical Education:
 
The residency training program is ACGME accredited for 8 residents per year. The program is under the able leadership of Program Director, Dr. Fidel Valea, Associate Professor of Gynecologic Oncology. The Department is host to all four post-residency fellowships offered by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. These include fellowships in Gynecologic Oncology, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery/Urogynecology.
 
Undergraduate Medical Education
 
Medical student education at Duke University commences at the clinical level in the second year of medical school. As such, students begin the clinical basic clerkship in Obstetrics and Gynecology during the second year. The curriculum is geared toward providing the student with a solid introductory educational foundation in obstetrics, gynecology specialties and subspecialties. The medical student curriculum is under the leadership of Dr. Elizabeth Livingston, Associate Professor of Maternal Fetal Medicine. Dr. Livingston is responsible for curriculum development and rotational assignments for students on the basic clerkship, third and fourth year student electives and for visiting students.
 
The department participates in all aspects of student education including faculty mentorship in the third year research program,
and fourth year electives.
 
The department sponsors a student interest group with the goal of encouraging Duke students toward a career in Obstetrics and Gynecology and it’s subspecialties.
