Educational Goals
The Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery Fellowship’s primary goal is to train and develop pelvic surgeon/scientists, who pursue productive academic careers and become preeminent clinicians. During the three-year fellowship, a physician gains knowledge, skills and judgment to be able to:
- Evaluate, diagnose and treat: complex pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, other pathologies requiring reconstruction.
- Evaluate and manage infectious and noninfectious irritative conditions of the lower urinary tract and pelvic floor.
- Evaluate and manage patients with voiding dysfunction.
- Understand the technical and interpretative aspects of urodynamics, electrophysiologic and radiologic testing.
- Participate in outpatient clinics.
- Acquire preoperative evaluation experience in assessment and planning therapy.
- Acquire surgical skills for complex pelvic organ prolapse, urinary and fecal incontinence.
- Routinely conduct resident teaching.
- Complete at least two graduate level statistical courses for credit as specified by the ABOG requirements.
- Gain understanding of the methodologies for scientific investigation.
- Design a research project, statistically test and critically interpret the results in a thesis paper.
- Complete research and have at least 5 articles for publication in peer review journals.
- Co-author solicited manuscripts and book chapters.
- Present at national urologic and gynecologic meetings.
