Clinical Experience
Inpatient and outpatient training is conducted within Duke Hospital and the Outpatient Clinics of the Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center (Morris Cancer Clinics), which are located on the same campus. The major component of instruction is experienced in conjunction with direct patient care. Attending physicians equally share in all aspects of the clinical service. The Fellow is supervised and advised by the faculty, allowing for progressively increasing responsibility and independence.
Once a day, a faculty member of the Division leads Inpatient Ward Rounds for the Fellows, Obstetric and Gynecologic Residents, and Medical Students. Each individual is expected to participate in Rounds. The primary goal during Rounds is to teach patient management.
The surgical aspects of gynecologic oncology are taught by the Gynecologic Oncology Faculty in the operating room. All radical, intestinal, and urinary tract surgery is performed by the Fellow with faculty supervision. As a Fellow's experience and skill increase, more independence is allowed to develop the role of teaching the Junior Fellow and Residents. Major abdominal and pelvic surgery may be performed by the Fellow supervising a Resident.
Outpatient teaching is similarly accomplished during direct patient care. With faculty supervision, the Fellow manages outpatient chemotherapy, laser therapy, and follow-up of patients. The Fellow supervises residents and students in the Colposcopy/Dysplasia Clinics.
