John Wilson Schmitt, MD
Dr. Schmitt has practiced for more than 30 years specializing in General Obstetrics and Gynecology. Fifteen years were spent in a very busy private practice in Raleigh while the remainder has been spent in an academic practice as a member of the clinical faculty at both the University of Virginia and most recently Duke University. This clinical experience has been of tremendous value in terms of the patient care component of studies involving screening for and treating premalignant diseases of the uterine cervix, a significant part of his practice.
He is the Director of The Cervical Cancer Prevention Clinic at Duke and Vice Chair of Outreach. Over the last 6 years he has been involved in global women’s healthcare working 3 months out of the year in East Africa where resources and access to care are limited. He also is the Medical Director of Gynecologic Services at the Durham County Health Department. He serves a teaching consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Center in Moshi Tanzania. He is also the secretary of the F. Bayard Carter Alumni Society at Duke.
Dr. Schmitt’s current interests revolve around cervical cancer prevention and improving maternal health as well as improvements in access to care and current disparities both in the US as well as in the developing world. He is also working with Biomedical Engineering at Duke developing unique ways to screen for and prevent cervical cancer in the developing world. He is involved with projects in Tanzania as well as Peru with plans to expand to Kenya, Zambia, Rwanda, and India in the near future.
