William Steven Meyer
William S. Meyer, MSW, is the Director of Training for the Department of Social Work and is an Associate Clinical Professor in the Departments of Psychiatry and Ob/Gyn at Duke University Medical Center. Bill has been a supervisor and team leader of 3rd year psychiatry residents for over 25 years.
He is a past-president of the American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work and is a former Secretary of the National Academies of Practice. He is on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Education Center of the Carolinas and he holds faculty appointments at The University of North Carolina and Smith College schools of social work. He has lectured and written extensively on mental health related topics and he is on the Editorial Board of Psychoanalytic Social Work.
He is the recipient of numerous awards, including, in 1999, “The Heart of Social Work Award” received at the Council On Social Work Education, and, in 2005, the Edith Sabshin Award for teaching, from the American Psychoanalytic Association. He is the 2010 recipient of the Day-Garrett Award from Smith College and the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association for Psychoanalysis in Clinical Social Work. In 2010, he was a recipient of Duke’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Award for exceptional leadership and commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion within the Duke community.
His interests are in clinical social work, psychoanalytic psychotherapy, pregnancy and post-partum mood disorders, and the history of the relationship between the mental health professions and the LGBT community.
