Arleen Song, MD, MPH, subspecialist in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery (MIGS), discusses “everything fibroids,” including personalized treatment, tumor genetics, recurrence and what’s best for patients, on the BackTable podcast “Contemporary Approaches to Fibroids.”
Dr. Song covers the evolution of the MIGS field, care options and what the future looks like. She shares insight about mentorship, education and training. Dr. Song serves as program director for the Complex Benign Gynecology Fellowship at Duke, which began in 2023. “What we are teaching is management of complex gyn disease processes, such as endometriosis, such as fibroids … teaching how to both medically and surgically manage these disease processes over the long term, and also advance surgical skills. It’s more than just going in and learning how to get into the retroperitoneal space,” Dr. Song notes — emphasizing the importance of teaching how to take care of patients through longitudinal, continuous care for fibroids and endometriosis.
“Uterine fibroids are a global epidemic. We need to train our doctors about how to take better care of these patients, and our patients deserve subspecialty care for this,” she said, stating that Duke Ob/Gyn’s MIGS fellowship is tailored toward disease processes, not solely surgical procedures.
