Alfonso Graduates from Cefalo National Leadership Institute

Congratulations to Clayton Alfonso, MD, who graduated from the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) Cefalo National Leadership Institutea program structured to provide early career leaders in ACOG and ob/gyn tools to improve skills relevant to their roles. The four-day intensive session covered leadership styles, adaptive leadership, communications, media training, upstander training, problem solving, team building, mentoring and peer coaching.

Dr. Alfonso is on the ACOG Government Affairs Committee — a national role —  in addition to his advocacy positions at the local and district levels. He serves as the North Carolina section chair and the District IV legislative chair for ACOG.

"Throughout the sessions, we took several tests including the FIRO-B, Meyers-Briggs, change style indicator and 360 evaluations from ourselves, our bosses, our peers and our direct reports, and we were able to have time with an executive coach to help us review these results and incorporate them into our career and leadership development," said Dr. Alfonso.

Approximately 40 leaders at various stages of their careers participate once per year in the Cefalo National Leadership Institute and are selected from each of the 12 ACOG districts.

"I was fortunate to be nominated/selected this year and the experience was transformational. I learned so much about myself during this experience and can’t wait to incorporate it into my career both here at Duke and my future in the ACOG," said Dr. Alfonso. "The work isn’t done though —  over the next six months, there will be follow-up webinars and book readings, while continuing to meet with our executive coach as we cement all the knowledge we learned."
