On May 15, Duke Ob/Gyn presented Charles B. Hammond, MD, Research Day. This engaging day honors the legacy of Dr. Hammond, an internationally recognized leader, educator, researcher and advocate for women’s health. Annually, the department commemorates the impressive and tireless research efforts of trainees, and we honor Dr. Hammond.
At this year's event, 11 residents and seven fellows presented their research, representing the culmination of months of thoughtful inquiry, hard work and personal and professional growth.
Featured lecturer and distinguished judge was Kimberly Kho, MD, MPH, MSc, professor of obstetrics, gynecology and women’s health and associate chair of faculty development at the University of Hawai’i. She presented "Suffering is not a Credential: Ergonomics, Culture and Career Longevity in Obstetrics and Gynecology."
The department also welcomed two alumni "back home" as distinguished judges:
- James M. Edwards, MD, maternal-fetal medicine (MFM) specialist at WakeMed Physician Practices in Raleigh, where he serves as clinical lead for diabetes in pregnancy. A proud Duke alumnus, Dr. Edwards completed both his ob/gyn residency (2010-2014) and MFM fellowship (2014-2017) at Duke.
- Laura N. Homewood, MD, minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon (MIGS) at University of Virginia Health, where she specializes in performing robotic, laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery for women with a variety of complex gynecologic conditions. Dr. Homewood completed her ob/gyn residency at Duke in 2018.
Hammond Research Day is a time to celebrate and honor Duke Ob/Gyn's academic mission, as well as trainees for their achievements in research and dedication to impacting the future of women’s health. The historical day also includes a poster gallery displaying the research of current undergraduate and medical students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral candidates working with Duke Ob/Gyn faculty members.
