Duke Ob/Gyn is proud to announce the 2019-2020 Appleseed Resident Teaching Award recipients. Three residents, Noor Alshibli, MD; Kerry Drury, MD; and Tatiana Acosta, MD, MPH, were recognized for outstanding performance as educators and mentors and were selected by a democratic vote by Duke medical students “because they not only exceeded expectations of medical pedagogy, but have shown genuine passion for training the next generation of doctors…”
“The Class of 2022 would like to thank all members of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for their help on clerkships this year. As we transitioned to didactics, the role each member plays in our clinical education was only made more obvious. Though each resident was given unique comments in their nominations, all those nominated made medical students feel like valued members of the team and took special care to help them reach their educational goals. This year, we are awarding three Ob/Gyn residents,” noted presenters Allison Oliva and Danae Olaso, Appleseed Committee Co-Chairs. The presentations were made on June 3, 2020 following virtual grand rounds.
The Appleseed Resident Teaching Award was created in 2008 by Duke medical students in an effort to recognize, support and reward exceptional teaching and mentoring by house staff. The awards are presented annually to no more than 10% of the total residency classes, and are designed to highlight their positive impact upon education.
Included among the praises each awardee received are the following testimonials to why they were selected:
Noor Alshibli, MD
“Noor is fantastic to work with! She takes time out of her extremely busy schedule as an intern to provide one on one feedback. She also took time to do teaching on subjects that were not even directly related to the sub-rotation I worked with her on in order to help me prepare for labor and delivery. I also really appreciated Noor took the time to learn about me as a person and make me feel like a valuable member of the team.”
Kerry Drury, MD
“Kerry was a fantastic teacher on GynOnc. She was always looking out for students and effectively incorporated us into the team. I not only felt extremely welcomed, but learned a ton both in and out of the OR! One of my favorite sub-rotations so far and Kerry was a huge part of that.”
Tatiana Acosta, MD, MPH
“I worked with Tatiana in clinic and she was one of the most thoughtful and intentional teachers I've had. She always took the time to give feedback that was constructive and helpful, and let me take the lead as much as possible when we saw patients.”
