On Friday, May 14, 2021, Duke Ob/Gyn presented Charles B. Hammond, MD, Research Day virtually. The event was dedicated to the late Dr. Charles Hammond, former Department Chair and renowned educator, researcher, advocate for women's health, mentor and obstetrician/gynecologist.
During this much-anticipated annual event, trainees present research abstracts and demonstrate their dedication to impacting the future of women’s health. Dr. Hammond died on February 1, 2021, and this year's event honored his legacy. As Chair and Residency Program Director for more than 20 years, Dr. Hammond was committed to ensuring that residents and fellows developed into well-rounded academic obstetrician/gynecologists with outstanding clinical skills, a sharp scientific mind and a compassionate heart.
The resident winner this year is Esther Chung, MD. The fellow winner this year is Kathryn Shaia, MD, MPH (REI fellow).
The event's featured speaker and judge was Laurel W. Rice, MD, Chair of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Judges were Vanessa Haygood, MD, 2021 President of the F. Bayard Carter Society and retired co-founder of Central Carolina Obstetrics and Gynecology; and Bruce Lessey, MD, PhD, professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Reproductive Medicine, Wake Forest Baptist Health.
