Duke University Hospital and Duke Regional Hospital have been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as “Best Hospitals for Maternity.”
This is the first year that USNWR has evaluated obstetrical care. Unlike the annual hospital rankings that are presented each summer, which only rank based on gynecologic care, the evaluation of maternity care did not provide a ranking, but instead evaluated participating hospitals by several quality metrics (scheduled early deliveries, C-section rates in low-risk women, rate of exclusive breastfeeding and offering vaginal births after C-section). Rankings recognized those who achieved the highest standards. The evaluation focused specifically on low-risk, rather than high-risk, deliveries. As noted in the USNWR announcement, “Hospitals that performed well had fewer newborn complications, fewer early deliveries and fewer C-sections compared to other hospitals across the nation.”
Out of 2,700 hospitals nationwide that offer maternity services, DUH and DRH were among only 237 who achieved the recognition of Best Hospitals for Maternity, and 2 of only 11 hospitals in North Carolina. Full list.
"This recognition is the direct result of the hard work, dedication and talent of all who participate in care of our pregnant patients," said Matthew D. Barber, MD, MHS, Chair of Duke Ob/Gyn.
