Associate Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology Jonas Swartz, MD, MPH, has been awarded administrative supplement funding totaling $164,000 for collaborative work with Ob/Gyn faculty, the Duke School of Nursing (SON), the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI) and the Duke Department of Population Health Sciences. The supplemental funding relates to Dr. Swartz’s current R01 award: Improving institutional processes to reduce patient harm using evidence-based standards. He was awarded the $4 million R01 grant by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) in 2025, which spans five years.
The parent project aims to develop guidelines to help hospitals and institutions adapt clinical practice to restrictive state reproductive health laws, and will now incorporate nurses’ perspectives in project guidelines, as well as work in partnership with Duke Ob/Gyn, the DCRI (PrefER) and the Duke Department of Population Health Sciences (QualCore) — strengthening the effort. This administrative supplement will fund collaboration with nurse co-investigator Bonnie Hepler, RN, MSW, MSPH, PhD, assistant professor in the Duke SON, and will build qualitative and quantitative data.
“The goal of this research is to help understand how institutions follow the law when faced with restrictions to evidence-based reproductive health care, and to improve those processes,” said Dr. Swartz.
