Jeffrey A. Kuller, MD, is co-author of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine position statement on mild fetal ventriculomegaly: diagnosis, evaluation, and management. The SMFM Consult Series publication is published in the July edition of the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and provides guidance for obstetric care providers.
When enlargement of the lateral ventricles is identified, a thorough evaluation should be performed, including detailed sonographic evaluation of fetal anatomy, amniocentesis for karyotype and chromosomal microarray analysis, and a workup for fetal infection. With isolated mild ventriculomegaly, after a complete negative evaluation, women can be counseled that the outcome is generally favorable and the infant is likely to be normal, according to Dr. Kuller.
