Leadership of Duke University Health System and Duke University/Duke School of Medicine today announced that Matthew Barber, MD, MHS, chair of Duke Obstetrics & Gynecology, has accepted the role of interim senior vice president of Duke Health Integrated Practice, effective July 1.
Dr. Barber has supported the DUHS collective culture work known as Better Together as an executive sponsor. He was chief of the medical staff of Duke University Hospital from 2019 to 2022. His dedication to the Duke Health missions, passion for collaboration and enthusiasm for the future of the organization will serve DHIP teams as efforts to strengthen the collective vision continue.
Dr. Barber will serve as interim senior vice president in this important time of transition as current senior vice president John Sampson, MD, PhD, MBA, has accepted the position of dean of the University of Colorado School of Medicine and vice chancellor for health affairs. A national search for the next senior vice president for DHIP will launch this summer.
Duke University Health System Chief Executive Officer Craig Albanese, MD, MBA; Chief Operating Officer Tom Owens, MD; and Duke University Executive Vice President for Health Affairs/Dean of Duke School of Medicine Mary Klotman, MD, stated in the announcement, “As we we work together during this very important period of transition, Matt’s leadership will build on the successes of the past year and help us advance the operational and strategic work that is currently underway to fully integrate DHIP into Duke University Health System.”
Brenna Hughes, MD, MSc, will serve as executive vice chair for Duke Ob/Gyn, overseeing and coordinating departmental operational and strategic activities, while Dr. Barber focuses on his new interim role as interim senior vice president of DHIP.
