ANNOUNCEMENT FROM DUKE OB/GYN CHAIR MATTHEW D. BARBER, MD, MHS

With great pride in the outstanding accomplishments and expertise that Dr. Phillip Heine has brought to the Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialty, and to Duke Obstetrics and Gynecology in his 18 years with the Department, I am announcing that he has been appointed Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Dr. Heine came to Duke in 2000 as the Chief of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine and, in addition to building a world-class Division, has served in multiple leadership roles in the Department and at Duke Health, including most recently Vice Chair for Obstetrics and Director of the Women’s Health Clinical Service Unit. He is internationally acclaimed for his research in reproductive infectious diseases and pregnancy outcomes and has served as mentor and teacher to many in Ob/Gyn. Phil has made an indelible mark on the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and we are certainly better for it. He will be missed.

During his career at Duke, he has made impressive inroads in the field of women's health, and has positively impacted countless patients, colleagues and trainees.

He has held appointments while at Duke that include Ob/Gyn Interim Chair, Vice-Chair for Administration, and Medical Director for the Durham Council Health Department’s Obstetrics and Family Planning Clinic.

Internationally acclaimed for his research in the MFM specialty, he is an expert on Zika virus exposure and infection and served as an advisor to the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology in this capacity. HIs commitment to women's health is beyond measure. We truly wish him the best as he embarks upon the next chapter of his impressive career, effective February 1, 2019.
